The committee headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday (March 14) selected retired IAS officers Gyanesh Kumar and Sukhbir Singh Sandhu as Election Commissioners. Sukhbir Singh Sandhu has worked with Union Minister Nitin Gadkari and Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami. Sandhu was a great favorite of both the leaders. Sandhu was appointed Chief Secretary when Pushkar Singh Dhami became the Chief Minister in 2021. After leaving the post of NHAI Chairman, Union Road and Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari had praised him fiercely. Congratulating Sandhu through an e-mail, Gadkari had described his tenure as NHAI chairman as the “best ever”.

Who is Sukhbir Singh Sandhu?

Sukhbir Singh Sandhu was born in 1963. He is from Punjab and is a former IAS officer of Uttarakhand cadre of 1988 batch. He has also served as Additional Secretary, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development.

Sukhbir Singh Sandhu holds an MBBS degree from the Government Medical College, Amritsar and a master’s degree in History from Guru Nanak Dev University (Amritsar).

Sukhbir Singh Sandhu also has a law degree. Sandhu has done research on ‘Urban Reforms’ and ‘Municipal Management and Capacity Building’. Sandhu has also been awarded the President’s Medal for his service as the Municipal Corporation Commissioner of Ludhiana, Punjab.
