Manipur Violence: Violence is not stopping in Manipur, miscreants set fire to the residence of the woman minister

The incidents of violence that started in Manipur since last month are not taking the name of stopping. On Wednesday, some miscreants set ablaze the house of state women minister Nemcha Kipgen in Lamphel area of ​​Imphal West. This incident happened on Wednesday evening. Officials said Kipgen was not at home when the miscreants torched the minister’s official bungalow. As soon as the information was received, the firemen reached the spot and controlled the fire.

9 killed, 10 injured in violence

Kipgen is the leader of the Kuki community. So far no group has claimed responsibility for the arson. Earlier on June 13, late night violence broke out in Kangpokpi district, in which nine people were killed and 10 seriously injured in firing and arson by miscreants. According to reports, miscreants set several houses on fire in Khamenlok village.

Curfew in 11 districts of Manipur

Earlier, armed miscreants surrounded Kuki village in Khamenlok area bordering Imphal East district and Kangpoki district at around 1 am on Tuesday, officials said. In the firing that followed, people from both sides became casualties. The area lies near the borders of the Meitei-dominated Imphal East district and the tribal-dominated Kangpokpi district.

Meanwhile, the district authorities have reduced the curfew relaxation hours in Imphal East district and Imphal West district. Earlier this exemption was from 5 am to 6 pm, but now it has been changed from 9 am to 6 pm. Curfew remained in force in 11 of Manipur’s 16 districts, while internet services remained suspended.

More than 100 people have lost their lives in the Manipur violence so far.

Army and paramilitary personnel have been deployed to restore peace in the state. Significantly, violent clashes started after the tribal solidarity march was organized on 3 May 2023 in protest against the demand of the Meitei community for granting Scheduled Tribe (ST) status in Manipur. In which more than 100 people have lost their lives and more than 310 have been injured. Meiteis constitute 53 percent of Manipur’s population and live mainly in the Imphal Valley. The Nagas and Kukis, on the other hand, constitute 40 per cent of the population and live in the hilly districts.
